Introduction

French Onion Beef and Rice is a comforting one-pan dish that combines caramelized onions, savory ground beef, and tender rice with rich French onion flavors. It’s a hearty meal perfect for busy weeknights or cozy dinners at home.

A white bowl filled with a mixed dish of cooked rice, ground beef, small diced orange carrots, and green peas, all evenly combined with a slightly glossy texture showing moisture from cooking. The rice grains are light brown with some darker bits where the beef is cooked. The bowl sits on a wooden table with a block of cheese and a silver fork nearby, while some fresh green parsley rests on the table in the foreground. The background is softly blurred. Ingredients

  • 2 tsp Tastefully Simple™ Avocado Oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 2 tsp garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Tastefully Simple™ Onion Onion Seasoning
  • ½ tsp Tastefully Simple™ Seasoned Pepper
  • 1 cup white long grain rice, uncooked
  • 2 cups beef stock
  • ¾ cup Tastefully Simple™ French Onion Skillet Sauce
  • 1 cup frozen peas and carrots
  • 1 cup Gruyére cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Add the avocado oil to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the sliced onion in the hot oil, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and caramelized. This can take up to 20 minutes. If the onion begins to burn, reduce the heat and add a little more oil.
  2. Step 2: Remove the caramelized onions to a plate. In the same skillet, add the ground beef and break it up with a spoon. Cook until fully browned and crumbled. Drain any excess fat from the pan.
  3. Step 3: Return the skillet to the stove and add the minced garlic, onion seasoning, and seasoned pepper. Cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Step 4: Stir in the uncooked rice, beef stock, French Onion Skillet Sauce, frozen peas and carrots, and the caramelized onions. Combine well and bring the mixture to a boil.
  5. Step 5: Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let it cook for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and has absorbed the liquid.
  6. Step 6: Fluff the rice and beef mixture with a spoon. Stir in the shredded Gruyére cheese until melted and well combined. Serve warm.

Tips & Variations

  • For a richer flavor, use homemade beef stock or add a splash of dry white wine along with the beef stock.
  • Swap Gruyére for Swiss or mozzarella cheese if you prefer a milder taste.
  • Add mushrooms or bell peppers when cooking the onions to increase the veggie content.
  • If you don’t have Tastefully Simple™ seasonings, substitute with garlic powder, onion powder, and freshly ground black pepper.

Storage

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stove over low heat or in the microwave, stirring occasionally to distribute the heat evenly. Add a splash of beef stock or water if the mixture seems dry when reheating.
