Cereal
- 1 12.8-oz box (362g) Chocolate Chex® cereal
Chocolate Coating
- ½ cup (100g) firmly packed light brown sugar
- ⅓ cup (67g) granulated sugar
- ⅓ cup (32g) Dutch processed or unsweetened cocoa powder
- 8 ounces (227g) dark or semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
- ⅔ cup (126g) chocolate sprinkles (optional)
- ¼ cup (30g) powdered sugar
- Prepare the Cereal: Pour the Chocolate Chex® cereal into a large bowl and set it aside, ensuring it remains unbroken for the best texture.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate small bowl, whisk together the light brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cocoa powder until well combined and smooth.
- Melt the Chocolate: Place the chopped dark or semi-sweet chocolate into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on HIGH for 20 seconds, then stir. Continue heating in 20-second increments, stirring after each, until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.
- Combine Chocolate with Cereal: Immediately pour the melted chocolate over the cereal in the large bowl. Gently stir with a spatula or spoon to coat all the cereal pieces evenly without breaking them.
- Add Sprinkles: Transfer the chocolate-coated cereal to a large zip-top bag or airtight container. Add the chocolate sprinkles, then seal and shake gently until the sprinkles are evenly distributed throughout the mix.
- Coat with Sugar and Cocoa: Add the sugar and cocoa powder mixture to the bag or container. Seal and shake thoroughly to coat all the cereal pieces with the dry mixture evenly.
- Add Powdered Sugar: Finally, add the powdered sugar to the mix, seal, and shake one last time until everything is evenly coated.
- Cool and Store: Spread the coated puppy chow onto a baking sheet lined with foil or parchment paper to cool and set. Once cooled, discard any excess powder and store the puppy chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
Notes
- If Chocolate Chex® cereal is unavailable, substitute with 8 cups of regular Rice Chex® or another crisp rice cereal.
- You can use either Dutch-processed or traditional unsweetened cocoa powder. Dutch-processed cocoa has a milder, less bitter flavor.
- Store the puppy chow in an airtight container to maintain freshness and crispness.
- This recipe requires no baking and uses melting chocolate to achieve the brownie batter flavor.
