Ingredients

Scale

Crust

  • 2 cups Flour
  • 2 teaspoons Sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Cinnamon
  • ⅔ cup Canola oil
  • 3 tablespoons Milk

Apple Filling

  • 4 cups Apples, peeled, cored and sliced
  • ⅔ cup Sugar
  • 3 tablespoons Flour
  • Dash of Lemon juice
  • Dash of Salt
  • 2 teaspoons Cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400℉ (204℃) to prepare for baking the pie.
  2. Prepare Pie Plate and Dough: Spray the pie plate evenly with cooking spray. In the plate, mix together flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt using a fork until combined.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients: In a small bowl, combine milk and canola oil. Pour this mixture over the dry ingredients in the pie plate. Reserve one-third of this dough mixture for the crumb topping.
  4. Form Crust: Press the remaining two-thirds of the dough evenly into the pie plate, ensuring it goes up the sides as well to create the crust.
  5. Prepare Apple Filling: Place the peeled, cored, and sliced apples along with sugar in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 2 minutes to soften. Then, add flour to the bowl and microwave for another 2 minutes to thicken the mixture.
  6. Season Filling: Stir in a dash of lemon juice, salt, and cinnamon into the apple mixture for balanced flavor and aroma.
  7. Assemble Pie: Pour the apple filling into the prepared crust evenly. Then scatter the reserved dough in small pieces across the top to create the crumb topping.
  8. Bake: Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes until the crumb topping and crust turn golden brown.

Notes

  • Pie Shield: Use a pie shield to protect the crust edges from burning while baking.
  • Shortcut Tip: Frozen apples can be used without peeling, making preparation easier.
  • Topping: For extra sweetness and crunch, sprinkle additional sugar on top of the crumb topping before baking.
  • Pie Crust Option: You may substitute the crust with your favorite homemade pie crust if preferred.
  • Other Mix-Ins: Add nuts or cranberries to the filling for extra texture and flavor.
  • Low Sugar: Use sugar alternatives like Splenda to reduce sugar content without compromising taste.
  • Baking Tip: Place the pie dish on a baking sheet to catch any drips and simplify handling when removing from the oven.
