Ingredients

Scale

Brownie Ingredients

  • 1 stick unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons coffee extract or 1 tablespoon instant coffee
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

Coffee Frosting Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons instant coffee granules
  • 24 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the baking dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C). Grease an 8-inch baking dish with non-stick spray or line it with parchment paper and spray again to prevent sticking.
  2. Melt the butter: Place the butter in a microwave-safe bowl and melt it in the microwave until fully liquid, about 30-45 seconds.
  3. Mix wet ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the melted butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract. Stir thoroughly until well combined and slightly fluffy.
  4. Add coffee flavor: Stir in the coffee extract or instant coffee until evenly distributed throughout the wet mixture.
  5. Combine dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder.
  6. Incorporate dry into wet: Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and mix until everything is just combined without overmixing.
  7. Bake the brownies: Spread the batter evenly in the prepared baking dish. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  8. Cool brownies: Remove brownies from the oven and allow them to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before frosting.
  9. Prepare coffee frosting: Dissolve the instant coffee granules into 2 tablespoons of heavy cream and set aside. In a large bowl, beat the butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and continue beating until fully combined. Add the coffee-cream mixture and beat well. Add remaining cream one tablespoon at a time until the frosting reaches your desired consistency.
  10. Frost the brownies: Spread the coffee frosting evenly over the cooled brownies. Slice into squares and serve.

Notes

  • For a stronger coffee flavor, use coffee extract instead of instant coffee or increase the amount of instant coffee slightly in the frosting.
  • Do not overbake; brownies should be fudgy and moist inside.
  • Cooling the brownies completely ensures the frosting won’t melt when applied.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
  • To make the brownies gluten-free, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
