Ingredients

Scale

Apples & Pastry

  • 4 fresh apples, peeled, cored, and sliced into wedges
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed and cut into squares large enough to wrap each apple slice
  • 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces

Syrup & Seasoning

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (for sprinkling on apples)

Optional

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash to brush pastry)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare baking dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare apples: Peel and core the apples, then slice them into wedges or rounds suitable for wrapping.
  3. Cut pastry squares: Roll out the puff pastry if needed, and cut into squares large enough to completely wrap around each apple slice.
  4. Assemble dumplings: Place an apple slice on each pastry square, sprinkle with a mixture of sugar and 1½ teaspoons cinnamon, and dot with small pieces of butter. Optionally, brush the edges with a bit of water or egg wash to help seal. Fold and seal the pastry around the apples tightly.
  5. Make syrup: In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Heat gently, stirring until sugar dissolves to create a syrup.
  6. Pour syrup and bake: Place the dumplings in the prepared baking dish. Pour the warm syrup evenly over the dumplings. Optionally brush the pastry with beaten egg for a shiny golden crust. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and the syrup is bubbly.
  7. Serve: Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly before serving. The dumplings are delicious warm, allowing the sweet cinnamon syrup to soak in the flaky pastry.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a balanced sweet and tart flavor.
  • Brushing dumplings with egg wash before baking gives the pastry a beautiful glossy finish.
  • Ensure the syrup is poured warm to help cook the pastry evenly.
  • Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra indulgent treat.
  • You can prepare the dumplings ahead and refrigerate before baking; just add a few extra minutes to the bake time if baking straight from cold.
