Meat & Aromatics
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef
- ½ cup minced yellow onion
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
Spices & Seasonings
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
Pasta & Sauce
- 2 ½ cups dry farfalle pasta (8 ounces)
- 2 ½ cups water
- 1 ½ cups low sodium marinara sauce
Cheeses
- ½ cup shredded mozzarella
- ½ cup grated Parmesan
- ½ cup ricotta
- Heat and Brown Beef: In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook for 5 minutes, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks until browned.
- Add Aromatics and Spices: Add the minced onion, garlic, dried basil, oregano, and red pepper flakes to the pot. Stir and cook together for an additional 4 minutes to develop flavors.
- Combine Pasta and Liquids: Add the dry farfalle pasta, water, and marinara sauce to the pot. Stir well to combine all ingredients evenly.
- Bring to Boil: Cover the pot and turn the heat to high. Allow the mixture to come to a boil over 3-5 minutes while covered.
- Simmer Pasta: Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium. Keep the pot covered and cook for 6-7 minutes or about half the time indicated on the pasta package. Stir every few minutes to prevent sticking. The pasta should be al dente but not hard.
- Rest the Pasta: Remove the pot from heat and take off the lid. Let the pasta sit for 5 minutes to continue cooking and absorb the liquid.
- Incorporate Cheeses: Stir in shredded mozzarella, grated Parmesan, and ricotta until evenly combined and creamy.
- Serve: Serve the lasagna warm topped with extra Parmesan cheese for garnish and flavor.
Notes
- The ground beef can be replaced with ground turkey, chicken, or lamb with minimal flavor change.
- For extra heat, add 1 teaspoon Calabrian chili paste or ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes during cooking.
