Filling
- 1 cup fresh spinach (chopped and lightly sautéed, or thawed frozen spinach squeezed dry)
- ½ cup feta cheese (crumbled)
- ¼ cup cream cheese (softened)
- 1 garlic clove (minced)
- ½ tsp dried oregano (or Italian seasoning)
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- Pinch of salt (optional, since feta is salty)
Pastry & Finishing
- 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling, optional)
- Prepare the Filling: In a bowl, combine the chopped and lightly sautéed spinach with crumbled feta cheese, softened cream cheese, minced garlic, dried oregano, black pepper, and a small pinch of salt if needed. Stir well until the mixture is creamy and fully combined.
- Preheat and Prepare Pastry: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Slightly roll the puff pastry sheet on a clean surface to smooth and even it out.
- Assemble Twists: Spread the spinach and feta mixture evenly over half of the puff pastry sheet. Carefully fold the other half of the pastry sheet over the filling to cover it completely. Using a sharp knife, cut the folded pastry into approximately 1-inch wide strips. Gently twist each strip several times to create spiral twists.
- Apply Egg Wash and Bake: Place the twisted strips on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each. Brush each twist generously with the beaten egg wash to give them a beautiful golden color as they bake. Optionally, sprinkle some coarse sea salt on top for added flavor. Bake in the preheated oven for 18 to 22 minutes, or until the twists are puffed, golden brown, and cooked through.
Notes
- For a vegetarian option, verify that the puff pastry you use is made without animal-derived ingredients such as lard or butter.
- These twists can be enjoyed warm right out of the oven or served at room temperature, making them versatile for parties or snacks.
- Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days to maintain freshness.
